This is the beginning of a new phase of our lives and we are so excited about it and want to share it with you. Through years of prayer and consideration we have just begun the adoption process to bring a new child into our family. Unless God leads us a different direction, we will be adopting a boy under 2 years old from Ethiopia.
Since we often get asked what led us to adoption, are we crazy, do we not know we already have 3 kiddos!! Here is a glimpse at our heart for adoption…
We adopt because we are adopted. I truly believe I can’t explain our desire to adopt separate from the gospel as, to us, they are truly one in the same. Though I am sinful and undeserving, through the incredible grace and mercy of God, I am not only forgiven and given eternal life, but I am made an heir! A co-heir with Christ, a true child of God.
“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him” Romans 8:16-18
We know that our family adopting will not make sense to the world apart from the gospel. To the world it looks expensive, risky, difficult and unneccesary. But so was our salvation. Jesus didn’t come to die as an easy alternative, a painless path or one that made any sense. And yet – to Him – We are worth it! Praise God!!
Over the last 3 years we have truly started to see the call of the orphan as the responsibility of the church. Now don’t get me wrong, I do not think every family is called to adopt, but I do believe every Christian is called to orphan ministry. Pray. Support. Adopt. All three of these are interwoven and necessary for the cause of the orphan.
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:18
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27
“God is the Father of the fatherless and protector of the widow.” Psalm 68:5
While we are so excited at the opportunity to bring one child home, we know that the orphan crisis cannot be solved by adoption alone. The ultimate crisis is to teach these, and all children, who the father of the fatherless is. Introduce them to their maker, creator and one who loves them and desires to spend eternity with them. So I ask you to join me in praying for the orphans. My daily prayer is this:
Father wrap your arms around the orphaned children of this world.
Help them to find a Father in you so they will be fatherless no more.
We also ask your prayers for our family as we start this journey that will affect the rest of our lives. It will most likely be 2-3 years before we bring our son home and your prayers mean the world to us.
Love in Christ,
Alyson & Pat
